111*, 44*, 163*, 111* and 112: Karun Nair breaks List A world record with 3rd consecutive hundred in Vijay Hazare Trophy | Cricket News
With his scoring glut extending to a fifth successive match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Vidarbha captain Karun Nair shattered the world record alongwith his third consecutive hundred in the tournament against Uttar Pradesh at the Vizzy Stadium in Vizianagaram on Friday.
Chasing a 308-run target, Nair reached his third successive ton off balls, following opener Yash Rathod’s century. Nair joined his former teammate and Karnataka captain Mayank Agarawal and Punjab opener Prabhsimran Singh as the third batter to record three consecutive centuries in the 50-over tournament this season.
Nair’s Unbeaten* World Record
More strikingly, Nair compiled a mountain of runs before being dismissed for the first time across five games as Vidarbha stands at the top of Group E with 20 points. The 33-year-old Nair opened the campaign with an unbeaten 112 against J&K in a 222-run chase before scoring 44 not out against Chhattisgarh. Nair then smoked 163* and 111* in his previous two outings against Chandigarh and Tamil Nadu to top the batting charts.
As he crossed 70 runs against UP on Friday, Nair became the first Indian batter to record 500 List A runs without being dismissed across innings. He then went past the List A record set by former New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin (527) in 2010 before reaching his seventh List A hundred, four of which have come in the last eight days. Nair was eventually dismissed for the first time in five innings, on 112 off 101 balls, by UP’s Atal Bihari Rai as Vidarbha romped to a comfortable eight-wicket win.
Nair ended his 11-year association with Karnataka last season before making the switch to Vidarbha in 2023. Named captain for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Nair was also picked up for the IPL after two seasons during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction last November. The right-handed batter was snapped up by Delhi Capitals for Rs 50 lakh in what will be his second stint with the franchise after 2016-17.
Having made his last appearance for India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2017-18 at home, Nair was listed as an uncapped player in the IPL Auction. In 2016, Nair had become only the second Indian batter to slam a Test triple century, scoring 303 not out against England in Chennai. Nair would, however, only win three more caps in 2017 before being dropped from the Test squad after six matches and 374 runs to his credit.
