AMU Appointed Its First Female VC: 3rd University To Do So

In its 123 years of history, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) appointed its first female Vice Chancellor on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Professor Naima Khatoon, has been appointed as the new VC of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Hereby, joining the list of universities with female vice chancellors after Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawahar Lal University.

In the letter to the university from the Ministry of Education, Naima Khatoon has been appointed by the Ministry of Education after getting approval from President Draupadi Murmu (president is also the visitor of AMU). Her tenure at the university as the Vice chancellor will be for a period of 5 years or before the age of 75 years, whichever is first after the commencement of her position as the VC of AMU.

The letter also included an ECIs (Election Commission of India) letter dated on April 9, 2024 stating that the commission had no objection from Model Code of Conduct (MCC) aspect for the appointment of vice chancellor of AMU on condition that no political mileage be entertained.

Khatoon will take over the current acting VC of AMU, her husband Professor Mohammad Gulrez who took over the position last year after the then VC Tariq Mansoor was nominated as the MLC (Member of Legislative Council) of Uttar Pradesh.

Professor Naima Khatoon before her appointment as the VC of AMU has been serving as the principal of Womens College at AMU. Completing her PhD in psychology from AMU, she was later appointed as a lecturer in the psychology department of AMU in 1988.

Fast forward to 2006 she was elevated to the position of professor, later continuing to the position of Principal of the Women’s College in 2014.

Aligarh Muslim University was founded in 1875, and was earlier named Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College and was later renamed as AMU by the Aligarh Muslim University Act. Though Begum Sultan Jahan was appointed as the chancellor of AMU in 1920, this is the first time for the university to get a female vice chancellor.
