Chandigarh court notice to Kangana, two others over movie ‘Emergency’ | Chandigarh News

A Chandigarh district court Tuesday issued a notice to actress BJP Mandi Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut and two others on a complaint filed by a city advocate, seeking an FIR against them for allegedly maligning the image of Sikhs in their upcoming film ‘Emergency’.

Hearing a complaint filed by Ravinder Singh Bassi, an advocate at the Chandigarh district court and president of Lawyers for Humanity, an NGO, Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Ankit Airi issued notice to Ranaut, screenplay writer Ritesh Shah and Zee Studios to file their reply by December 5.

Advocate Bassi, confirmed that a notice has been issued in the matter and the respondent parties, will have to appear before the Court. A detailed order from the Court was yet to be released.

Bassi alleged that Ranaut and Zee Studios “tried to malign the image of Sikhs” and “particularly targeted former Jathedar of the Akal Takth Sahib by presenting him as a terrorist in the movie ‘Emergency” and sought an FIR be registered against the trio under 196 (1) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 197(1) (punishment for making or publishing false or misleading information that could jeopardize India’s sovereignty, unity, integrity, or security), 302 (uttering words, etc., with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings of any person), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023.

Bassi further alleged that Ranaut, the actor, producer and director of the film ‘Emergency’ — the trailers of the movie released on social media platforms — “is a trouble creator and she has many times created difference among communities by her provoking statements and speeches against minorities”.

Festive offer

“The accused without studying proper Historical facts and figures portrayed the Sikhs in bad shape and also made wrong and false allegations against the supreme temporal seat of the Sikh Community as in the trailer of the movie shown the sitting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takth Sahib demanding a separate state, which is totally false and it was shown just to malign the image of Sikhs and Akal Takth Jathedars,” Bassi further alleged in the complaint.

Bassi said while sitting in his office at the District Court Complex, Chandigarh, he saw and listened to the act of the accused circulated on social and print media, hurting the feelings of the Sikh Community, with the complainant also being a devoted Sikh.

Thus, Bassi sought the court’s directions to the SSP of the Chandigarh Police to register an FIR against the trio.
