Man held for molesting daughter in West Bengal’s first arrest under BNS | Kolkata News

West Bengal saw its first arrest under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on Monday night when a man was held in South 24 Parganas district for allegedly molesting his minor daughter.

According to the police, the man, who works in the Bengali television industry, was arrested following a complaint lodged by his wife alleging that he had sexually molested their daughter when the girl had been alone at home.

“The man has been charged under BNS section 76/351(3) and section 10 of the Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. He has a history of harassing women. The investigation is underway,” said a police officer from South 24 Parganas district.

The police said the incident took place when the girl was sleeping at home and her mother was out for work on July 30. “Taking advantage of the situation, the accused entered the room and locked the door from inside. He then sexually assaulted her. His wife returned home unexpectedly and caught him in the act,” the officer added.

At least 31 FIRs were registered in various police stations in Kolkata under the BNS on Monday, when the new criminal law took effect.
