The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has proposed an ambitious metro extension project to enhance connectivity between Pune’s Lohegaon Airport and the rapidly developing southern suburbs. The plan aims to improve last-mile connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and promote public transportation as a sustainable alternative in the city.

Maha-Metro Plans Airport Link and Southern Corridor to Boost Pune’s Urban Mobility

As per the proposal reported by the Hindustan Times, Maha-Metro intends to connect key areas like Kondhwa, NIBM, Yewalewadi, and Undri with the airport. The extension aligns with Line 3 of the Pune Metro and includes a 3-km spur from Ramwadi station to Lohegaon Airport, significantly improving accessibility for air travellers. Another proposed route includes a 20-km corridor from the Civil Court interchange to Yewalewadi, with an additional spur toward NIBM to meet the rising transit demand in the southern regions.

Authorities are evaluating whether Maha-Metro will independently manage the project or integrate it with the ongoing Line 3 construction led by the Tata-Siemens consortium. The proposed corridors are part of a broader initiative to promote urban mobility and reduce the city’s dependency on private vehicles.

Pune Metro Expansion Plans Move Forward with Feasibility Studies

Metro connectivity is also expected to extend to Kondhwa and Undri, expanding the coverage and convenience for residents in these densely populated areas. Maha-Metro has already invited consultancy firms to develop an Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The AAR will assess various transportation models such as metro rail and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), based on criteria including cost-effectiveness, environmental impact, ridership potential, and integration with the existing infrastructure.

Following the evaluation, the DPR will outline technical specifications, estimated costs, and a phased implementation timeline. This development marks a crucial step toward building a more connected and sustainable transit network in Pune.
