Mumbai’s temperature dips to 16.8 degrees, coldest November in 8 years | Mumbai News
Mumbai on Tuesday woke up to its coldest November day since 2016, as the Santacruz observatory registered 16.8 degree Celsius, which is nearly four degrees below the normal. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city’s cold spell will continue with the minimum temperatures expected to record 17 degrees for the next 3-4 days, at least.
While IMD’s Santacruz station registered 16.8 degrees on Monday night, which is 3.8 degrees below the normal, the Colaba coastal observatory recorded 22.5 degrees during the same period.
Data from the weather bureau showed that this is the city’s coldest November day in the past eight years. Prior to this, the lowest minimum temperature of November was logged in 2016 when the temperatures dipped to 16.3 degrees on November 11.
Earlier this week, the minimum temperatures had dropped to 18.5 degrees — making it the city’s coldest November night since 2022.
For the record, Mumbai’s coldest November day was recorded in 1950 when the Santacruz station logged a minimum of 13.3 degrees.
According to the IMD’s forecast bulletin, the city will continue to experience cool nights for the next 3-4 days amid the minimum temperature forecast to oscillate between 17 degrees to 19 degrees until the end of November at least. Following this, the temperatures may see a small spike upto 21 degrees from December 1.
IMD has also forecast the likelihood of fog or mist during the early hours of the day.
On Tuesday, the air quality in the city showed a marginal improvement as the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) touched 158, which is categorised as ‘moderate’. However, of the city’s 24 stations, at least four stations logged ‘poor’ AQI with the worst air quality observed in Shivaji Nagar at 311.
Meanwhile, heralding the onset of winters, the maximum temperatures during the day also hovered below the normal. On Monday, the maximum temperatures in the suburbs as well as island city division oscillated between 32 and 33 degree Celsius.
