Student killed, 3 injured amid clash during singer Masoom Sharma’s concert at Panjab University | Chandigarh News

A student was stabbed to death while three other students sustained injuries in a clash that broke out during Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma’s concert at the Panjab University (PU) campus in Chandigarh Friday night. The police have registered a case of murder against unidentified assailants.

The deceased was identified as Aditya Thakur, a second-year student of Computer Science Engineering at PU’s University Institute of Engineering and Technology. Thakur was rushed to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) along with the others but succumbed to the injuries.

Simrit Kahlon, dean of students’ welfare at PU, said the boy hailed from Talwara and his family lives in Nalagarh. “The family was informed about the incident and they reached PGIMER last night. The post-mortem was conducted today (Saturday) and the family took the body to their native place. We are in touch with the family members in this hour of grief,” Kahlon said.

According to preliminary information from the police, around 9.30 pm, two groups of youths got into an argument behind the stage where Masoom Sharma was performing. This led to a fierce clash in which the youths were injured.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Kahlon said: “It was a freak incident. We are looking into it. We just returned from PGIMER. We are in touch with the students and the Chandigarh Police, which is investigating the case.”

Festive offer

Investigators suspect the assailants might be from the slum areas in the neighbourhood who unauthorisedly entered the PU campus before attacking the students who were part of the audience.

About the possibility of a security breach during the event, the dean said, “We had taken all required permissions from the Chandigarh administration. The permission to conduct the show at the Panjab University Campus extension in Sector 25 had come from the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Adequate police and PU security arrangements were made but this incident took place. It is an extremely sad and unfortunate event.”
